An often, never thought of, core element in web design, is simply, white space [Of course it doesn't need to be white per se, but you get the point]. In other words, it's 'letting content breathe'. Too often users [and large corporations by the drove] think of a page as real estate, and need to cram in buttons, animations, banners, advertisements & content in every conceivable area. A good example is PC mag.com. However, if truth be told it's a lot better than it used to be.
Thankfully there are good designers out there, and many write for; a list apart. They lay out the basics with some excellent tips and screen shots, that should hopefully calm down your over zealous advertising & marketing department, and hopefully get the point across.
In essence, giving text, and pretty much any media, just simply some space, can really improve the clarity, and delivery of what you really want to get across. It's always far better than some jam packed, blinking, flashing, 'sardine canned in', floating advertisement, [hovering over what little actual content there is] page.
If ever there was a truer statement; less, is definitely, more.
