Apparently some employers are asking for access to people’s Facebook profiles or private information? WTF? Passwords, really? You never give passwords to anyone, unless y'know you have a gun to your head, at which point it may be wise to share your farmville collection & drunken snaps toot suite.
Personally I have nothing on my page I'd be too bothered to be seen publicly and at one time always shared all. (And I would have continued had facebook not wanted to continue to ensure privacy is as sneakily complicated and made more for advertisers as it can get.)
However, some good advice arrives of all places from....facebook. The social giant's Chief privacy officer on Friday made it violation of thier terms to be asked to do this by an employer or anyone else.
I'm sure they are doing this to cull any negativity towards their brand that may spill out due to effects on not doing this, but in a positive side effect for all of us, this actually helps fight some HR douchebaggery somewhere wherever someone was asked.
Perhaps if you are asked, ask first if the person is also willing to share their account 1st : )
